Brief summary + key benefits

Plastics & Rubber Care restores and protects exterior trims, grills, textured mouldings, and interior plastics as well as rubber seals, window channels and tyres. Quality products bring back a deep black/satin look, add UV and weather resistance, reduce dust attraction and leave a hydrophobic finish for easier cleaning.

Technical basics

Cleaners are mildly alkaline or neutral surfactant systems that break down silicone/oily road film. Dressings come as water-based emulsions (natural OEM satin, low odour) or solvent-based systems (richer black, higher durability outdoors). Polymers/siloxanes lower surface energy, adding water and soil repellency. Trim restorers may include black pigments to mask fading. Rubber conditioners contain antistatic agents and plasticisers to keep seals supple.

Compatibility: behaviour differs on glossy vs textured plastics. Avoid overspray on paint/glass; some solvent blends can stain sensitive surfaces. For tyres choose low-sling formulas to prevent fling. Under-bonnet plastics require heat-resistant dressings.

Selection criteria

Finish: OEM satin → water-based dressing; deep black/high exposure → solvent-based dressing. Location: interior (low odour, dry-to-touch), exterior (UV resistance, hydrophobics). Material: textured faded trims → pigmented restorer; smooth glossy plastics → clear dressing. Task: heavy grime → dedicated plastic/rubber cleaner; for maintenance a quick dressing suffices.

Application & maintenance

Prep: wash and degrease thoroughly; for silicone build-up use plastic-safe APC. Dry completely. Apply: spread evenly with an applicator; work in thin coats and wipe off excess after 5–10 min. Mask paint around pigmented restorers. On tyres set the desired sheen with a second coat if needed. Care: pH-neutral washes; avoid frequent strong alkalis/solvents. Condition seals seasonally to prevent sticking or squeaks.

FAQ

Which gives satin vs gloss? Water-based dressings for satin, solvent-based for richer gloss and durability outdoors.

Streaks/blotches after application? Usually uneven absorption or residue—reclean, apply thinly and level the excess.

One product for tyres and seals? Many are safe for both; pick a low-sling tyre dressing and a non-greasy seal conditioner.

What if it gets on paint/glass? Wipe immediately—solvent blends may stain; even water-based products can streak.

How often to reapply? Exterior trims every 4–8 weeks, interiors every 1–2 months, seals at each season change.
